Practice Profile

Design Approach

Client

Every place has a story, and stories are important in revealing the relationship people have with a place. The story of a place starts with listening to the client and to the community.

Community Engagement

Placemaking is primarily about people - part of the story, part of the adventure is talking, listening and discussing with people. We believe it is important to engage with the community to learn their stories, and facilitate participation and creative input.

Engaging the community enables understanding of the existing environment, cultural and historical context, how people currently use the space, how they are likely to use the space in the future, and what they would like to leave for future generations.

A vision which is informed and inspired by the community reflects its creative spirit and values, and encourages custodianship, social and environmental responsibility, and pride and respect - for the site and each other.

User Experience

Our experience in an environment is defined by how we think and feel in that space, and our experience and behaviour, can be influenced by good design.

For each project we explore how we can enhance and enrich the user experience, and create healthier living environments.

We focus on design which supports wellbeing, providing experiences which are delightful and memorable, and which encourage positive behaviours. We look to enhance the user experience through:

  • creating a sense of journey and adventure
  • making meaningful connections between people and place
  • embracing the notion of creative placemaking, and integration of artwork, information and storytelling

Positive emotional responses, behaviour, and choices can be influenced through making the spaces comprehensible, and providing familiarity and context – a deeper understanding of the site.

Journey

We aim to enrich the user experience by creating a sense of journey through the site, and providie engaging and memorable experiences and moments.

Connections

We look to enhance the user experience, through making meaningful connections between people and place.

Connections can be made through the architecture - construction, technology, statutory controls, history, culture, all come together to tell the story of the place.

We look to explore relationships between the architecture, the site, and the surrounding environment through materiality, expression of built form, and an urban elemental language which responds to the surrounding natural and built landscape, and reflects the cultural and historical meanings of the site.

Nature has been shown to have positive effect on health and wellbeing, increasing creativity, reducing stress, and creating calm. We aim to create healthier environments which connect with nature, through passive design, and expression of natural forms, colours and materials.

Through a layering of artwork and interpretive signage we can create intellectual and emotional connections between the user and the natural environment.

We look for opportunities to make connections between the user, landscape and cultural context through artwork and interpretive design incorporated into the urban fabric, and integrated with the architecture.

Creative Placemaking

Revitalisation of public space around arts and culture, and designing spaces which reflect the cultural and historical meanings of the site, creates environments which:

  • are inspired and are inspiring
  • enhance connection between people and place
  • foster a sense of stewardship, civic pride and respect
  • and promote community cohesion, health and wellbeing

We look for opportunities to work with the client and the community to create meaningful spaces which communicate the social, cultural and environmental significance of the site.

Artwork and interpretive elements may be incorporated into the design and/or integrated into the built form, combining historical and cultural references in a cohesive and sensitive approach.

Storytelling

Storytelling and interpretive design are important to our work - we connect through stories.

Storytelling is a traditional method used to teach about cultural beliefs, values, customs, rituals, history, practices, relationships, and ways of life.

Indigenous cultures have long passed on knowledge from generation to generation through oral traditions, including storytelling.

For First Nations people, storytelling is a foundation for holistic learning, relationship building, and experiential learning. One of the ways we share knowledge throughout our communities today is through storytelling.

Every place has a story to tell. And it is the exchange of stories which helps build our sense of commonality, and sense of community.

A subtle layer of storytelling through artwork and interpretive elements should form part of urban space design. Interpretative design connects people with our culture, history and the natural environment through storytelling.

An interpretive layer may take the form of artwork or other interpretive elements incorporated subtly into the structural components of the urban space, guided by the aspirations of the community.

We look for opportunities for urban elements to be transformed by artists, or provide a backdrop for interpretive signage.

This creative layer enriches visitor experiences, educates and informs, encourages awareness, and fosters community pride and respect.

Design Approach

Methodology

Fisher Design + Architecture aim to meet the client brief with economy, creativity, and with outcomes of excellence.

The story of a place starts with listening - to the client and to the community.

We develop a deep understanding of the brief, the site, and context, through meetings, site analysis, community consultation, and research.

We aim to identify the true needs of the project and the site, the critical issues to be addressed in the design, and discover the special nature of the place.

We provide strategic thinking and solutions with a design approach which combines both the pragmatic and creative, with key objectives to:

  • Explore broad concepts and project opportunities which might inform the development of the brief and budget
  • Meet the pragmatic and landscape specific needs relating to environmental impact, safe usage and sustainability
  • Enhance and enrich the user experience through creating a sense of journey and adventure, making tangible connections between people and place, embracing the notion of creative placemaking, and through storytelling
  • Provide healthier living environments which promote positive behaviour and wellbeing
  • Create a sense of ‘special place’, and communicate meanings of the site- its natural, historical and cultural context, through integration of landscape, interpretive design and built form.

We collaborate with and facilitate creative input from the client, stakeholders, the community, the consultant team, local artists, and contractors.

Our role on public projects has been both as an open, positive and critical sounding board and a facilitator negotiating through design, community and client approvals, documentation and constructional complexities.

Communication of the design and the production of construction documentation define the outcome of the project. We provide 3D computer modelling and illustrations to effectively present the design concepts to the client and community.

Detailed drawings and documents enable a comprehensive description of the designs for pricing and building. We offer services through to project completion where required to assist with the control of time, cost and quality during construction.
