Grafton – April 2021

A Q&A event – Building Bridges, was held at Grafton Library as part of the 2021 Plunge Arts and Culture Festival, which explored our natural and built environment and what that looks like in Grafton, ‘The City of Trees’.

The event included guest panellists Frances Belle Parker, Claire Aman and Anna & Christian Fisher from Fisher Design + Architecture who explored this topic through their experience.

The Plunge festival conversation will ultimately inform a 5 x 18m street artwork in Grafton Library car park.

Grafton Library is a central landmark that opened in 2014. The library site provides the perfect concrete canvas on which we can explore the relationship between the spaces of our CBD and the lush natural beauty of the Clarence Valley.

Gleniffer Reserves Interpretive Signage

The Interpretation Australia National Awards for Excellence were established in 2008 to recognise and reward outstanding heritage interpretation. The 2019 winner in the Projects $15,000 – $50,000 category was awarded to Fisher Design + Architecture for the Gleniffer Reserves Interpretive Signage.

Judges Comments:

“This is a lovely example of a well-thought out and well-rounded project. Every step was considered. The graphics and choice of recycled timber suit the project so well. The colour is perfect, even the ants that happened to be using one signage post (about fauna) help us see the value of sharing fauna stories.”

“The project’s aims and objectives were clear: to share the wonder and beauty of the valley, while simultaneously directing visitors to alternative places to enjoy the valley, and offer tips to assist in protecting the place. There was a clear objective that the project would include Indigenous input, and this was met in a substantial and fun way – love learning language and place names.”

“The use of both video and audio is a fantastic way of taking visitors further into exploring the unique heritage of the place.”

“The project clearly articulated the process undertaken with community to help build the project… It is commendable that such a small community would believe that their heritage is valuable and worth protecting, and find funds to demonstrate this.”

“Beautiful signage, lovely presentation using recycled timber. A high quality project with smart use of technology to engage.”

The 2018 Country Division Architecture Awards were announced on Thursday 4 October in the Hunter Valley as part of the NSW Regional Conference, with fifteen projects recognised across twelve categories.

Fisher Design and Architecture had three entries in the awards this year – the Sawtell Surf Life Saving Club Refurbishment, the Jetty4Shore Revitalisation Project, and the Jetty4Shores Stage.

The Urban Design Award was given to the Jetty4Shores Revitalisation Project by Fisher Design and Architecture with Mackenzie Pronk Architects and Coffs Harbour City Council.

The Jetty4Shores Stage by Fisher Design and Architecture with Mackenzie Pronk Architects, was awarded a commendation in the Small Project Architecture category.

Christian Fisher accepted the awards, acknowledging the outstanding collaborative effort of Coffs Harbour Council with the team of architects, engineers, artists, construction contractors, and the community, to revitalise the precinct integrating landscape, art and built form to create places for people to live and engage with each other.

NSW Chapter President, Andrew Nimmo, congratulated all of this year’s award winners and noted the important contribution the architectural profession as a whole was making to deliver more sustainable, cohesive communities.

‘Architects apply design thinking to everything they do in order to do more with less and help clients realise opportunities that they did not know existed,’ said Mr Nimmo. ‘This is just part of the value we describe when we speak of the design dividend, and each year we see the bar raised when it comes to the innovative design solutions and practices architects are implementing across regional NSW.’
